📌 What are they used for?
🔴 1. Strong Obligation in the Past
Past modals and phrasal modals of obligation are used to talk about obligations, expectations, advice, necessity, and lack of obligation in the past. They help us understand:
✔ They express
✔ Obligations
✔ Expectations
✔ Advice
✔ Necessity
✔ Lack of obligation
👉 They clarify
👉 What was required
👉 What was expected
👉 What was optional
👉 What was a good or bad idea
🔶 had to
When there was no choice. This is the past form of must.
⚠️ Important Rule
❌ I must go yesterday.
✅ I had to go yesterday.
We do NOT use "must" in the past → we always use had to instead.
✅ had to — Forced action / no choice
I had to wear a uniform. (It was mandatory.)
My parents had to work on Saturdays.
🔷 was / were supposed to
✅ was / were supposed to — Expected / planned
Sometimes the action did NOT happen.
She was supposed to talk to the teacher. (Maybe she didn't.)
❌ wasn't / weren't supposed to — Not allowed
He wasn't supposed to drive to school.
🔹 should have / shouldn't have + past participle
✅ should have + past participle — Good idea that didn't happen
I should have studied more.
❌ shouldn't have + past participle — Regret or criticism
She shouldn't have bought that jacket.

✅ needed to — Something was necessary
I needed to make an appointment.
🔵 didn't have to
✅ didn't have to — Not necessary (but may have done it)
I didn't have to go, but I went.
🟣 didn't need to / needn't have
✅ didn't need to — Action was unnecessary
We didn't need to buy tickets.
⭐ needn't have + past participle — Action happened but was unnecessary
I needn't have brought an umbrella. It didn't rain.

🚨 Important Rule — Never use MUST in the past
We never use MUST to talk about the past.
