📌 What are they used for?

Past modals and phrasal modals of obligation are used to talk about obligations, expectations, advice, necessity, and lack of obligation in the past. They help us understand:

🔴 1. Strong Obligation in the Past
🔶 had to

When there was no choice. This is the past form of must.

⚠️ Important Rule
❌ I must go yesterday. ✅ I had to go yesterday.
We do NOT use "must" in the past → we always use had to instead.
✅ had to — Forced action / no choice
I had to wear a uniform. (It was mandatory.) My parents had to work on Saturdays.
