Definition and Use

The verb to be is one of the most important verbs in English. It is used to:

  • Describe people or things
  • Say age
  • Talk about feelings
  • Say nationality
  • Talk about professions
  • Describe places or states
Examples: I am happy.  /  She is a teacher.  /  They are at home.

Singular and Plural Use

Singular:
  • I   → am
  • He  → is
  • She → is
  • It   → is
Plural:
  • You  → are
  • We   → are
  • They → are

Sentence Structure

Positive: Subject + to be

I am a student.

She is tall.

They are at school.

Negative: Subject + to be + not

I am not tired.

She is not sad.

They are not at home.

Questions

Short Answers

Positive:

Yes, I am.

Yes, she is.

Yes, they are.

Negative:

No, I'm not.

No, she isn't.

No, they aren't.
